Our History

We know what’s required to take a project from concept to reality. Our excavation and construction experience sets us apart from others in the industry because for us, it’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about getting the job done right. We have built a solid foundation in the Maine construction industry that goes back generations.

1969

In the Beginning...

It began in 1969 when Jeremie’s grandfather, William Whorff Sr., started a small construction company with a bulldozer and a single axle dump truck.

After working nights and weekends in the construction industry and working days at a lumber company, he decided to continue full time as a contractor.

The Legacy Begins

In 1969, Bill Whorff became incorporated and started a family legacy that would continue on for decades.

2nd Generation

For 25 years Bill Whorff Inc. was a well-known and successful residential business operated by Bill Whorff Sr. and his sons, Bill Whorff Jr. and Jim Whorff. Eventually, Jeremie’s father, Bill Whorff Jr., decided it was time to expand the business to the commercial market as well, so he took on the responsibility of Vice President in 1995.

3rd Generation

In the early years, Jeremie’s role at Bill Whorff Inc. was to make sure his father, Bill Jr., knew how difficult it would be to make money with a youngster testing the limits of our equipment.

In 2001, Jeremie’s full-time career in the construction industry began with the role of project manager.

50 Employees

By 2006, Bill Whorff Inc. had grown to employ 50 full-time employees and was capable of taking on nearly any project in the area, from water main installations to site work for department stores.

Economic Devastation

Sadly, the collapse of the economy in 2008 led Bill Whorff Inc. to downsize and eventually close in 2010.

A New Branch

Growing up working with and for the family business gave Jeremie the drive and knowledge to continue on that path. In 2009, he started a concrete business – Flatworks.

Continued Growth

Then in 2011, Jeremie started working for his wife Casey’s family excavation business, T&H Excavation, as well as continuing the concrete division.

After a year of working together, Doug Tourtelotte and he decided it was in their best interest to start another excavation company due to the volume and type of work they were pursuing.

It's official

Doug Tourtelotte incorporated Mid-Coast Excavation in 2012.

Legacy Continued

In 2014, Jeremie and Casey purchased the business.

Over the years, the business has grown and expanded more than we could have ever hoped or envisioned, and we owe so much of this success to our outstanding employees and extremely loyal clients. During these years of growth, one of the best things we could have asked for was Jeremie’s father, Bill Jr., and his wife, Susan, returning home to work alongside us. Bill Jr.’s knowledge, experience, and quality work brings immense value to Mid-Coast Excavation, Inc.

Back to where it all began

In July 2019, Mid-Coast Excavation, Inc. had an unexpected opportunity to repurchase Jeremie’s grandfather’s shop that was lost in 2010. We were finally able to return to where it all began.

Our Future

Our future here at MCE lies in the hands of our two boys, Brody and Bryson. Both boys started running equipment (with help, of course!) at the age of two, and are getting more skilled each year. As much as we feel we are teaching them about the business, they teach us much more about the true meaning of life and happiness.

Although we don’t yet know what paths Brody and Bryson will take, we’d like to think they may follow in the footsteps of both of their great-grandfathers, grandfathers, and their parents, and continue the family legacy in the excavation business.
